Almost Anyone Can Manage a
Mobility Scooter
Electric mobility or freedom scooters are very easy to
operate and only take about five minutes to
learn. The controls are simple, easy to use and
intuitive. Many handicapped people can use electric scooters
very well and the elderly usually have no trouble managing them
at all. They are designed to be used on the sidewalk which
means your loved one will not be out there in the middle
of traffic!

What is the Difference Between
a Freedom Scooter and a Power Chair or Electric
Wheelchair?
While electric mobility or freedom scooters are
like a "mobile chair" in some ways, they are not the same
as a "power chair" or electric wheelchair. Electric wheelchairs
are used by people with more severe motor impairment who even
need help getting around inside the house.
Freedom scooters are meant for people who have some
mobility, such as the elderly or physically challenged who tire
easily and have trouble walking more than a very short
distance.
This can be because of muscle weakness or joint pain due to
osteoarthritis, rheumatiod arthritis, osteoporosis, osteopenia,
muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular disease
or other crippling disease or injury. The scooter enables them
to travel much longer distances and get out at the end of the
journey with more energy for shopping, visiting friends and
family, recreational activities or community involvement.
For instance, the scooter can take them to the mall and then
from store to store inside the mall. At each store they can get
out and walk around the store if they wish. They will be able
to judge their own strength and stamina...and the scooter will
be right outside the store in case they feel tired. However, if
necessary, they can take the scooter inside the store with no
problem in many cases.
Electric Mobility or Freedom Scooters Are
the Safest Vehicles on the Road
Scooters are the safest
motorized vehicles on the streets. Scooter users are classified
as "motorized pedestrians," so scooters can (and should) be
ridden on the sidewalk. They're easy to operate, stable and
maneuverable. Drivers respect them; pedestrians and cyclists
make way. They come equipped with electromagnetic
brakes that engage when the accelerator is released.
It's the opposite to how a bicycle operates, so it's much safer
than riding a bike. If you were driving a car, it would be like
taking your foot off the gas and having the brakes engage for
you. Very safe, indeed! A safety helmet is always a good idea,
but truthfully most scooter users don't wear one...and never
need one.
For stability, four-wheeled scooters are best, but even
three-wheeled scooters are remarkably stable and tend to be
more manueverable. And the four-wheeled scooter models that
have the front two wheels positioned close together give you
the best of both worlds.

Keep Up With the Kids or Grandkids
A scooter can take the pressure off
family members to provide transportation, assistance
and companionship to elderly or handicapped relatives. With
more freedom, your loved one can enjoy their independence, make
or keep their friends, participate in many more activities and
become part of the community again.
Your Loved One Lives in an Apartment
A scooter is a compact, easily maneuvered vehicle with a
very small turning radius. They traverse narrow hallways
easily, turn corners on a dime and fit into small elevators.
When not in use, they can sit in a hallway, ready for the next
outing.
One thing to check is the size of the elevator in your
family member's apartment building. The smaller, three-wheeled
scooters often fit better into older, smaller elevators. Also,
check to see if the elevator has an electric eye or some
mechanism to hold it open while your loved one maneuvers their
scooter in and out of the elevator. This is especially
important if the elevator is small. My mother was not able to
use even the smallest scooter in her senior's apartment
building because the door kept slamming on her before she could
get in or out of the elevator. She has applied for a first
floor apartment in the same building so she doesn't have the
elevator to contend with. In this case an electric wheelchair
would have worked better, but she doesn't need that kind of
device, which is meant for the more seriously disabled, and is
both more expensive and less sturdy than a mobility
scooter.
Conclusion, in older buildings a first floor apartment may
be the best solution, if your loved one plans to own a
scooter.
Your Loved One Lives in a House With
Steps
Scooter ramps make it simple and easy for your loved one to
get in and out of their home. There are even portable ramps so
your loved one can be mobile when they visit someone else's
home or go on vacation. These lightweight portable aluminum
ramps pack up small and fit in a car trunk.
Mobility Scooters Are Called "Freedom"
Scooters For a Very Good Reason!
Owning a mobile scooter can literally change a person's
life! Scooter owners get out more and feel better about
themselves than their housebound counterparts. As a result,
their relationships improve, they stay healthier, retain better
muscle tone and they make new friends more eaily. They feel
useful once again, require much less support from their family
and become a part of the community once more.
Everything about owning a scooter is positive. Deciding if
your loved one, whether elderly or handicapped, could benefit
from a scooter comes down to the following:
-
Do they have normal street
sense?
-
Can they operate a few simple
controls?
-
Do they feel comfortable sitting down?
-
Do they truly love to get out and about?
If you answered yes, then a freedom mobility
scooter could very well be the answer to your loved one's
prayers. If your loved one doesn't feel ready for a scooter,
visit some of the online stores and gather testimonials. Also,
read our FAQ's.
Then present your case. With your genuine support, your loved
one can make the transition from house bound to mobile with
little persuasion required.

Medical Insurance Coverage for
Scooters
By the way often medical insurance, like
Medicare, will cover the bulk of the cost of a scooter or
electric wheelchair, so pensioners can enjoy their freedom,
too. Is medical insurance coverage for your loved one's scooter
a concern for you? If so,

issues...
How will a mobility scooter
change your loved one's life for the better? Well, they'll
be mobile!
They'll feel more spontaneous,
confident and adventurous in their daily
activities.
They'll grocery shop on their own schedule,
attend local recreational and fun activities, and visit with
friends more often. They'll motor to the mall and instead of
being exhausted when they get there, they'll have saved all
their energy for the fun part: shopping and
socializing.
They'll find themselves wanting to go further
afield. And because compact and travel scooters are so
reasonably priced, being truly mobile is no longer a problem
for anyone, even the elderly and handicapped. So they'll stow
their scooter in the trunk of their own or a friend's car and
take a jaunt into the countryside or to a local park. They'll
navigate any path with ease...and never get
tired!
Scooters have come a long way in the last
few years. Now people who formerly used a wheelchair can
graduate to the freedom of an electric scooter.
Advancements in technology, design and function have made
scooters a truly wonderful mode of transportation and
convenience for the elderly and handicapped.
Scooters have a small turning range and can
easily manuever in busy malls and narrow aisles of stores.
They are designed to be ridden on the sidewalk
and take uneven pavement in their stride. Scooters with larger
wheel size even fare well on country roads and well-packed
trails.
